The lush and amazing beauty of the Alps, filmed with Grace Painterly under natural light from the frigid winter until the redeeming spring, offers the physical and emotional background for “Vermiglio”, Maura Delpero’s visionary film, which won Silver Lion at 2024 Venetia Film Festival Film Film Festival from 2024. This singular portrait of an extended family, located in the small mountain Vermiglio village on the low days of the Second World War, follows a series of dramatic, consistent events, after the arrival of a taciturn Sicilian soldier (Giuseppe de Domenico), which hides inside the city after leaving the army. While he is there, the soldier develops a romance with the eldest daughter of the family, Lucia (Martina Scrinzi). “Vermiglio” shows the life of a provincial family in a distant village suspended in time by the customs of a discolored era. Conjering stories from the past of one’s own family, Delpero creates a deeply personal and human story reminiscent of the great neorealist movement in Italian cinema, but through the prospect of Lucia “Vermiglio” feels distinct and Roman.
